Community Builders is established.
June 4, 1964
[5/29-Barnet] Originally the South End Community Development Inc., it is founded by Robert Whittlesey with offices at 577 Tremont Street. Its purpose is to demonstrate the economic feasibility of renovating South End rowhouses into affordable housing. Funded originally from grants from USES and Permanent Charity Fund of Boston, the organization renovates its first rowhouses in 1966* and completes its first project in 1970.* It reorganizes as Greater Boston Community Development in 1964 and subsequently expands throughout metropolitan Boston. It reorganizes again as The Community Builders, Inc. (TCB) in 1988. The organization re-focuses on assisting large public and assisted housing projects with revitalization and management in 1996.
